MEDRAD Volunteers Give Back to Area Communities
September 12, 2009 | Mitch Fryer, LEADER TIMES
Armstrong County United Way Director Deede Anthony didn't have to do much to get some cleanup work done at United Way agencies around the county.
All she had to do was show up first thing in the morning with the donuts.
The volunteer workers did the rest.
Employees of MEDRAD volunteered Friday at the Mechling-Shakely Veterans Center in Cowansville and at Life Choices in Manor for the United Way's annual Day of Caring.
"MEDRAD contacts me every year," said Anthony. "They really like doing it."
It's the 10th year that MEDRAD employees have spent a day away from their jobs to volunteer in communities throughout the region.
The company which develops, markets and services medical devices used to diagnose and treat disease, is located in Indianola, O'Hara, Warrendale and Saxonburg.
This year 800 employees came out for the Day of Caring. A crew of 10 worked at Life Choices and 15 were at the county's veterans center.
Their help couldn't have come at a better time.
MEDRAD officials said participation in the Day of Caring is more important than ever as charities are struggling with increased demands and decreased resources.
"I believe that our outreach this year is particularly impactful to the community as many organizations have been hit hard by the economic downturn," said Alicia Cafardi, MEDRAD spokesperson. "Although money is tight all around, we're happy to provide enthusiastic volunteers who hope to accomplish much during this day."
It was the first Day of Caring for MEDRAD production workers Christina Hogenmiller of Kittanning Township and Wanda Arble of Ford City.
"They asked for volunteers to work in the county," said Hogenmiller of working at the veterans center. "It was close enough to home so we took it."
"It makes you feel good helping other people," added Arble.
Mechling-Shakley Veterans Center Executive Director Hopeton Thompson likes having the extra help for the center which provides community-based residential rehabilitation to homeless veterans.
"We don't have the staff we should, so the outside help is a big plus," Thompson said. "The United Way has been a Godsend to us."
As the Day of Caring helps kick off the 2010 fundraising campaign and the 50th year that the United Way of Armstrong County has been serving the people of the county, Anthony is not optimistic that this will be a good year. It's going to be hard to reach the goal of $150,000, she said.
Last year they did reach that same goal and have made their goal most every year including the first-year 1959 goal of $115,000.
"Right now what I'm afraid of is state employees," Anthony said. "They're not getting their pay so we're not getting what they pledged."
There is less support from businesses in the county.
"We don't have the businesses," she said.
Snyder Associated Companies, teachers groups and hospital employees make up the largest contributors, according to Anthony.
"It depends a lot on the economy," Anthony said. "I think it's great that we've been able to stay that long in the county."
The United Way of Armstrong County supports 15 member agencies in the county: Access Abilities; ARC Manor; YMCA; The ARC; Big Brothers Big Sisters; Boy Scouts; Catholic Charities; Freeport Council of Churches Food Bank; Girl Scouts; Life Choices; Lifesteps; Mechling-Shakely Veterans Center; Multiple Sclerosis Service Society; the Salvation Army; and the Salvation Army Service Unit.
Gifts to the United Way will help fund those local programs.
Bradigan's has agreed to sponsor an incentive for this year's campaign.
Donate $52 or more and you will be eligible to win prizes. First prize is $250 of gasoline; second prize is $150 of gasoline; and third prize is $100 of gasoline.
"Your donation will make a lasting impact in the lives of people in our community," said Anthony.
